Pearl Harbor Remembered
by Melody Lassalle

In 2001 we memorialize the 60th Anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. You'll find the Portuguese descendants among the casaulty and survivor lists. Here are some resources about that historic day.

December 7, 1941, according to President Roosevelt was "...a day which will live in infamy..." It is the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The battleships Arizona, Oklahoma, California, and Utah were sunk. About 19 ships were sunk or damaged. The Japanese lost 28 planes and 3 midget submarines. At the same time, the Japanese also attacked Guam, Wake Island, and the Philippines. On December 8th, the US Congress declared war on Japan.

On that day, approximately 3000 Americans (civilians and military personnel alike) lost their lives. Over 1000 were injured. In light of the recent events including the tragedies of September 11 and the war in Afghanistan, it seem even more important to gain perspective on such tragic events.
Here are some links to help bring better understanding of the Pearl Harbor Attack.
